Juan R Leon and his Dean Rhapsody 12-string bass on stage.

Jupiter Groove is a 3-piece band from Orlando, Florida that plays a blend of instrumental rock, fusion and prog that they refer to as “Improgrooveinstrumetal”. The album was recorded at Parsonage Recording Studios in Gibsonton, Florida by Jeff Knauff, then mixed and mastered at Mix Monsters by Sean Shannon.

Juan told us, “We recorded three separate signals for my Dean Rhapsody:

Bass rig in the recording studio

”One mic signal on a Carvin Micro Bass MB12 3-way stacked on a Carvin Micro 15" cab. The mic was placed on the MB12 in such a way as to pickup the 12" woofer, the 6.5" mid, and the 3" tweeter (No mic on the 15"). The Carvin ran through my pedal board of which I only used an Axon Bass Distortion pedal and a Boss Volume pedal;”

“One direct signal from the Carvin MB12 to the board. Pre-FX;”

“One direct signal from the Behringer Bass V Amp Pro. The setting on the V Amp eludes me, but if memory serves, I used an SVT sim setting with some distortion and compression. I also had a Behringer FCB1010 foot controller. We split the signal to the Carvin and Behringer using a simple signal splitter, possibly a Hosa. My Dean Rhapsody 12-string bass was strung with SIT ‘Juan's Blistering Harmonics and Plenty Of Punch Set’ Power Steels.”

Helix controller

Juan also plays his Dean Rhapsody 12-string bass at the band’s live gigs. He stated, “If you look close at my picking hand, I use metal banjo picks on my 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers to get an extra clang out of my strings. I don't always use them as they do tend to get hung up on the octaves if I lay in too hard. Otherwise I use my fingers and the edge of my nails.”

“My live set up these days is a Helix Rack with the Helix foot control, a Crown 1000-watt power amp, and a Mark Bass Standard 104HR 4x10 cabinet, and custom cables by Gary Tompkins.”
