Band Promotion

Gig / Tour Promotion

When Terry Grant played with the band Punch Drunk Cabaret from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the gig notices often included his Waterstone 12-string bass. He also included his Waterstone 12 in promotional photos for his own band.

Over several years Cheap Trick used a variety of shots in various poses from this photo shoot in 1978. It includes the Hamer 12-string Quad bass, and has been nicknamed the “Metropolitan” background by some fans due to the metropolitan scene with skyscrapers in the background. This image was the most common one circulated to newspapers in the band’s press kits, and over time it was reprinted with various inscriptions below the photo. Another version of this photo was used on the LP sleeve for the Heaven Tonight album.

The newspaper ad for the December 12, 1978 Cheap Trick concert in Lewiston, Maine is the “Metropolitan” photo with a reversed mirror image. This photo plus the one from the Kansas City Times in November, 1980, still includes Tom Petersson, who had left the band several months earlier.

Music Industry press kits

The Warner Brothers Records 1994 press kit for Cheap Trick’s “Woke Up With a Monster” tour mentions the 12-string bass: “Other highly visible assets are Tom’s distinctive twelve string basses - instruments he designed and developed himself…”

Cheap Trick created a 7-page spiral-bound trade booklet for their Rockford album for use in promoting the band in the radio and television markets. The drawing of Tom Petersson’s Waterstone 12-string bass is displayed many times throughout the folder.
