Hamer Chaparral Quick Identification Guide

There has been confusion on eBay and elsewhere about the different models of the Hamer Chaparral 12-string basses. One model is made in the USA, the other was first made in Korea, then in China and finally in Indonesia. Superficially they all look identical, but with their different construction and features they sell for dramatically different prices. This quick reference guide will allow the different models to be easily distinguished from each other.

Headstocks

All USA-made Hamer B12L’s read “Hamer USA” on the headstock.

The Korean CH-12 inscription just reads "Hamer".

CH-12’s made in China and Indonesia read "Hamer XT Series" plus "Chaparral 12" is on the truss rod cover.

Pickups

The B12L pickups are made by EMG and clearly labeled as such.

CH-12 pickups are a generic humbucking design and not labeled.

Serial Numbers

USA-made B12L serial numbers always have 6 digits stamped into the wood on the back of the headstock.

CH-12 serial numbers always have 7 digits and are applied as a decal. The country of origin is found directly below the serial number.

Pricing

The USA-made Hamer B12L 12-string basses carried a MSRP of $2,899.00. Most dealers sold these basses at a discount of 10% or more off this retail price.

The Hamer CH-12 12-string basses had a MSRP of $1,299.00, however these typically sold new on eBay and elsewhere for as little as $899.00.
