Dave mentioned, “I first got a 12-string bass in the mid 1990's during the making of my album ‘Basses Loaded’. I had been playing a short scale 8-string bass for a while and was looking to kick it up a notch so I got a Hamer B12A 12-string bass in the ‘59 sunburst finish. The extra strings, big body and especially the longer scale make for a huge sound! It's all stock - I tend to not change things if I like them, unless a problem develops.”

He continued, “On the 12-string bass I pretty much use a pick all the time. I use medium to heavy gauge picks, and occasionally use a thumb pick which is a pretty interesting concept as it frees up your fingers to strum. The 12-string bass scares a lot of people. I have to be careful to pick my spots carefully, and not overestimate how open minded people may or may not be!”
