Our 12th Anniversary!

Surf's Man Cave - No windows or doors but who needs them?

Twelve years ago today this website was launched. Happy Anniversary to us! When this site first appeared in 2003 there were only 35 pages of information and a couple hundred photos. Today it's over 400 pages with over 3,500 images, and there is still enough additional information yet to be added to keep me busy for the foreseeable future. After being immersed in so much detail about the 12 for so long, sometimes it feels like the 12-string bass is completely mainstream instead of being a specialty in a niche market.

A lot has changed in the last 12 years. Bass manufacturers have come and gone, new ideas have been implemented, updated designs and finishes have appeared. New bassists have been drawn to the 12 and have included the instrument in their recordings and live shows. Other players have moved away from the 12. There is one thing though that is as true today as it was in 2003: 12-string bassists truly are still pioneers. Despite the fact that the 12-string bass has existed for nearly 40 years, the vast majority of people have never heard about it, let alone seen or played one. This presents a tremendous opportunity for a bassist to stand out from the crowd. Where else in an industry so immensely large and popular as the music business is it possible to arrive at the party decades after it started and still be considered a pioneer? I'll be writing lots more about this in a future editorial.

On a personal level, discovering the 12-string bass started me down a path that I never believed was possible. I have had some great experiences, have learned a TON (with much more undoubtedly still to learn), I've met THE COOLEST people and as proven in the photo above, have been infected with the Collecting Bug to an extent I've never before experienced. Viva la 12!

To everyone who has sent us photos and information and participated in our contests, you are the reason we are still here and growing. And for those of you who have provided financial support for this website, a special THANK YOU, it is greatly appreciated!

We can't do this alone and we need your help! When you'd like to join in, it's easy - send us photos of when you play your 12 at your gigs and we'll put together a Featured Player page for you. If you already have been featured, update your current information and photos and let us know what you've been up to lately. Write a review. Record an mp3, or if you've used your 12 on your band's CD, send us a copy of the album for our Discography section. Send us a prize to give away in our next contest. Share a tip that will make life easier for a fellow 12-string bassist. The list of possibilities is almost endless. When you're ready to join us we're easy to reach - you can find our complete contact info here.

Thanks to everyone who has helped us get to where we are today! And here's to another great twelve years - massive walls of sound and re-arranged internal organs for everyone, woo hoo!
